Why Use a Hydraulic Tensioner in Your Timing Belt System?

Hydraulic tensioners play an essential role in mitigating chain noise and vibration. Their optimal dynamic performance depends on its dynamic stiffness attributes and leakage gap size, making this component essential to timing belt systems.
Figure 9 depicts different hysteresis curves based on different excitation amplitudes while maintaining the same parameters (leakage gap of 0.035 mm, oil supply pressure of 0.4 MPa and oil temperature of 100 degC). The correlation between simulation results and experimental findings validates dynamic analysis as an efficient way of anticipating hydraulic tensioner responses.
Improved Preload Accuracy & Repeatability
Hydraulic tensioning is the preferred choice when high bolt preload accuracy or uniform load application across multiple fasteners are essential. By employing a hydraulic ram that fits over stud or bolt and transmitting load via hydraulic oil from a small pump, hydraulic tensioning tools eliminate inaccuracies caused by friction between bolt and flange.
Hydraulic tensioners offer advantages over mechanical automatic tensioner systems in terms of wear-and-tear resistance and contamination issues that lead to premature damping, such as piston rod wear or contamination that necessitates early damping. Furthermore, their maintenance requirements are minimal with only periodic inspections and calibration being necessary for their effective functioning.
A typical hydraulic timing chain tensioner assembly consists of a plunger equipped with both shoe contact end and valve head end. This plunger can move within an opening in the tensioner body, with its movement being connected with a poppet valve structure to vent pressurized oil when force applied by the plunger against shoe exceeds an threshold amount. This reduces maximum loads experienced by chain.
Reduced Thread Galling
Hydraulic tensioning of bolts eliminates directional forces created when applying torque, leading to greater uniformity of bolt loading and allowing smaller bolt sizes that would otherwise be untorque-able with traditional tools such as wrenches or tools of any sort.
Thread galling results when two metal surfaces contact under load and generate enough localized heat to cause adhesion between them, forming adhesion that causes adhesion between metals. It's most likely to happen with complementary screw threads with low ductility such as machine screws.
Hydraulic Tensioners in the form of stud or bolt tensioners provide a pure tensile (stress) load into a nut without encountering frictional resistance from its flange surface and threads when applying torque with a wrench, significantly decreasing galling risk while permitting smaller stud sizes for applications difficult to access by other tools.
Faster Installation & Outage Times
Mechanical tensioners often face issues related to tensioner pulley bearing wear and actuator degradation that reduce their performance, leading to tensioner loss or component failure if these elements aren't regularly replaced.
Bolt tensioning systems use hydraulic pressure to physically extend the stud bolt and apply an accurate, consistent axial load onto fasteners, eliminating temperature variations that affect preload accuracy and allowing faster installation/disassembly times.
Fixed hydraulic stud tensioner models are compact and straightforward. Simply position the Bridge over a nut, thread the Puller Bar onto a stud until it contacts the Load Cell, connect hoses, and start your tool!
Variable hydraulic stud tensioner models allow users to apply different axial loads on different bolt sizes at the same time, simplifying operations. Furthermore, this type of system eliminates crosstalk among studs for uniform gasket compression and bolt loads - an essential feature in creating leak-free bolted assemblies that function flawlessly.
Increased Durability
Hydraulic tensioner markets are expanding due to the rising demand for energy-efficient machinery and automotive systems, where tensioners play an essential role. Used for maintaining proper belt tension and dampening forces to improve belt durability and power transmission efficiency. Tasks must be performed under differing temperatures and loads which can put an undue amount of strain on tensioners; their compact yet lightweight designs make hydraulic tensioners ideal solutions in these situations.
